Consensus mechanisms are part of blockchain networks; it is how everyone agrees that the state of the network is ok without having to trust other participants. Conventional public ledger systems have employed proof of work (PoW) for which problems include high energy consumption, slow transaction speed, and scalability and centralization, among other challenges. A new concept referred to as proof-of-stake (POS) has been developed to solve such issues. PoS is less energy-consuming and has a faster consensus time than PoW. Currently, Ethereum, a global blockchain platform, has transitioned from PoW to PoS to show the possibilities of PoS for future blockchain applications.
In the book, "Proof-of-Stake for Blockchain Networks: Fundamentals, challenges and approaches,’’ the PoS is one of the most widely used consensus mechanisms in a blockchain network. They begin with general ideas about the blockchain and various consensus algorithms, including definitions of the terms and a general description of the network. After that, it describes the PoS mechanism in detail, its security level, efficiency, and potential for further development.
"Proof-of-Stake for Blockchain Networks: Fundamentals, challenges and approaches” is a useful reference for any reader: scientists, engineers, postgraduates, etc. It is also relevant for developers and businessmen who would like to create applications based on PoS technology. The book’s primary goal is to offer a comprehensive analysis of PoS, which will help readers better understand this relatively new consensus algorithm.
